Wear occurs when you are engaging or disengaging the clutch. The worst thing you can do is let the clutch out very slowly. Lots of wear as the clutch plates rub together. Holding the lever in at stop lights shouldn't be a problem, probably cause less wear than the extra shifting in and out of neutral, especially if it takes you five or six trys to find neutral like my wife.
